StreetMap Premium Mobile Map Packages, or MMPKs, have been a go-to format for Runtime apps, including Navigator, for offline or disconnected mapping, geocoding, and routing. You can also use these MMPKs in ArcGIS Pro if you’re a StreetMap Premium user. Have you ever wondered how StreetMap Premium MMPKs are put together? As I’ve already alluded, they’re made up of three components: a map, a locator, and a network. Right now, if you look under the hood, you’ll find that a MMPK is made up of a map of several vector layers optimized for drawing, the original or “Classic” locator, and the network.
Now I’d like to introduce you to the next generation of StreetMap Premium MMPKs. These MMPKs have the same functionality, but they’re made up of some newer, more modern components:
- Vector tile packages for mapping – the map is tile based and looks like the Navigation map available from ArcGIS Online. You’ll get a faster display along with a richer set of features.
- New style locator – you’ll have the same experience and quality results that you do with ArcGIS Online or StreetMap Premium.
- The same network – the network remains unchanged.
Why are we making this change?
Once ArcGIS Runtime was able to consume the new components, we knew it was time for the change.
You’re probably thinking, how will this impact me?
If you are using ArcGIS Runtime 100.6 or higher, Navigator 19.1.0 or higher, or ArcGIS Pro 2.5.1 or higher, you can use the new MMPKs without doing anything differently in your workflows. Install the MMPK as you always do and start using it. The key is to be on the right software version.
What if I’m still on an older version of the software?
You won’t be able to use the new format, but you can continue using the MMPKs you already have. Even if you’re on a supported software version, you can continue using the old style MMPK.
When will the new format MMPK be available?
It depends on the region you’re in. For North America, the first release is June 2020. The other regions will follow: Asia Pacific in August, Latin America in September, Europe in November, and Middle East/Africa in February 2021.
